Achieving LOw-LAtency in Wireless Communications

Project summary: The focus of LOLA is on access-layer technologies targeting low latency robust and spectrally-efficient transmission in a set of emerging application scenarios. LOLA considers two basic types of wireless networks, namely long-range LTE-Advanced Cellular Networks and medium-range rapidly-deployable mesh networks. Research on low-latency transmission in cellular networks is focused firstly on transmission technologies in support of gaming services which will undoubtedly prove to be a strategic revenue area for operators in the years to come. Secondly, LOLA also considers machine-to machine (M2M) applications in mobile environments using sensors connected to public infrastructure (in trains, busses, train stations, utility metering, etc.).

SMART-antenna multimode wireless mesh Network

Funded by: EU FP7 (2008-2011)

Coordinator: THALES, France

Project summary: The SMART-Net concept is based on a decentralised vision in which access infrastructure is partly distributed across the network, allowing reduction of service cost and significant increase of performance. A key objective of the project is to make available comprehensive and configurable experimental facilities for investigation of future wireless networks. This is achieved by deploying simulation and real-life Testbeds based on advanced Radio Access Technologies.
